This is awesome: A French prosthetics maker has partnered with graffiti artists to create a series of urban-inspired alternative arms and legs. Custoprothetik‘s mission is a noble one: They seek to “convey a more positive view of disability.” For a subject that still raises many prejudices, Custoprothetik’s specialized limbs are a means of expression and an “instrument of acceptance and ownership”.
It’s interesting to think about how a prosthetic limb can be a canvas. For people who have them, the alternative arm or leg is an extension of their bodies. While you may not be able to tattoo a prosthetic in the traditional sense, you can still augment them with art. I’m reminded of Mark who used to manage Giant Robot New York, and who covered his prosthetic leg with stickers.
In addition to graffiti writers, Custoprothetik works with tattoo artists, illustrators and graphic designers to create personalized prosthetics. I get the sense they genuinely care about what has got to be an incredibly niche community. Their website mentions that they organize art exhibitions and continue to search for new techniques and artists. On theirFacebook page, they post videos of news related to art and prosthetics. Good stuff all around.
